Did you know that Sir Frederick Banting and Theodore Loblaw were both born in Alliston? Dr. Banting, the co-inventor of insulin and treatment for diabetes, was knighted for his life changing medical discovery.

Raised in Alliston, Theodore Loblaw was the first to introduce the self-serve grocery store. Before Loblaws became Canada's signature name in grocery stores, Loblaw Groceterias was a tiny Toronto supermarket. In 1919, Theodore introduced the self-serve concept in grocery retailing, which was contrary to food stores at the time where customers had to wait for a clerk to grab items from behind a counter.
